Mrs Whelan is a registered nurse with a lifelong interest in health, fitness and self-defence. She is originally from England but has been training under Mr. Shane Fitzgibbon since coming to Galway in 2000. She achieved her black belt in 2005 and is now working towards her 2nd Dan grading. Since 2004 she has been involved in teaching both children and adult class at the Connacht Taekwon-do Academy centres, and has proved herself to be a very able Instructor. She is now responsible for running and teaching the Galway West classes in Barna.
For Mrs Whelan the primary objectives of TKD are achievement of potential and the enhancement of an individual’s health and welbeing. She sees TKD as a vehicle for health promotion and illness prevention, where training is about self-improvement. Self-confidence and self-esteem are increased through training when physical and mental obstacles are overcome. It is also about fun, and participation in a disciplined but friendly environment, thus enhancing physical and mental health.
